OT for all Australians
We understand that access to OT services is not always easy for people around Australia, particularly those living in rural and remote locations. Telehealth is a non direct face-to-face OT service that can be accessed anywhere in Australia via a video call system. These Telehealth assessments are generally for comprehensive occupational therapy assessments, such as a functional capacity assessment (FCA), NDIS access reports, plan review reports and occasionally housing assessments for participants over 16 years of age.
Functional capacity assessments are being recognised as best practice by NDIS to highlight a person's function and their support needs. Whether you are an NDIS participant, are applying for a plan or are accessing services privately, a functional capacity assessment may be appropriate for you.
At Therapy & You, functional capacity assessments comprise of face-to-face assessment sessions via telehealth to collect relevant information. A comprehensive report will then be completed to include your functional status, formal support needs, goals, recommendations for support, therapy and funding allocation requirements. The length of time this process takes will depend on your funding allocation and complexity of your situation. We work alongside the participant and their support coordinator to ensure the best possible picture is painted for the participants needs and goals.
Here's how telehealth occupational therapy works and its key components:
-
Initial Assessment: The process typically begins with an initial assessment conducted via video conference or phone call. During this assessment, the occupational therapist gathers information about the client's medical history, current condition, goals, and functional abilities. They may also assess the client's home environment and discuss any specific challenges or barriers they are facing.
-
Treatment Planning: Based on the assessment findings, the occupational therapist develops a personalized treatment plan tailored to the client's needs and goals. The treatment plan may include various interventions and strategies to improve the client's independence, functional abilities, and quality of life.
-
Remote Interventions: Occupational therapy interventions delivered via telehealth may include therapeutic exercises, activities of daily living (ADL) training, cognitive rehabilitation, sensory integration techniques, and adaptive equipment recommendations. The therapist guides the client through exercises and activities using video conferencing technology, providing real-time feedback and support.
-
Education and Coaching: Telehealth occupational therapy sessions often include education and coaching to help clients and their caregivers better understand their condition, learn self-management strategies, and develop skills to address specific challenges. The therapist may provide guidance on home exercises, adaptive techniques, and environmental modifications to promote safety and independence.
-
Monitoring and Follow-Up: Telehealth allows occupational therapists to monitor clients' progress over time and make adjustments to their treatment plans as needed. Follow-up sessions may be scheduled regularly to track progress, address any concerns or barriers, and provide ongoing support and guidance.
-
Collaboration with Other Providers: Telehealth occupational therapists may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists, and social workers, to ensure comprehensive care and coordination of services. They may communicate with other providers via secure messaging platforms or virtual meetings to discuss treatment plans, share progress updates, and address any interdisciplinary concerns.
-
Documentation and Privacy: Like traditional occupational therapy services, telehealth sessions require documentation of assessment findings, treatment plans, interventions provided, and client progress. Occupational therapists must ensure compliance with privacy regulations and maintain the confidentiality and security of client information when delivering telehealth services.
